Backbone State Park

If you are looking for a state park in Iowa, then Backbone State Park is just the place for you. It is rich with the state and nation's history. Founded in the 1920s, this park was the first state park in Iowa and many argue that it is the best state park in Iowa. Backbone State Park is named after its steep ridge of limestone named "The Devil's Backbone.
Description and history
Backbone State Park has 2,002 acres of wooded area with a huge variety of tree species. It is also home to many different wildlife such as deer, fox, turkeys, grouse, raccoon and bird species. Backbone State Park also aided the country with the economic crisis known as the Great Depression in the 1930s. During this time the Conservation Corps was formed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as part of the New Deal. This took unskilled youth from 18 to 25, assigned them to different state parks or natural areas and employed them to upkeep and maintain these areas. During this time many of the buildings found in Backbone State Park were constructed, including the dams on the river.
Amenities
As with most state parks, there are a wide range of amenities offered. It has over 125 campsites, cabins, picnic areas, bathrooms and showers. In terms of activities offered, there is fishing, swimming, hiking, backpacking, cycling and climbing.
